After much anticipation, Apple has finally revealed the iPhone 7 and an all new version of its already popular Apple Watch.
On September 7th Tim Cook opened the Apple launch event at the the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, where the new iPhone 7 and Series Two of the Apple Watch were unveiled. Here are the key features they revealed:
The iPhone 7 design is similar to the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6, however, key differences include the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack and the redesigned antenna, which now fits inside the enclosure for a sleek design. There are also new colours to choose from. The space grey has been replaced with gloss and matt black options, along with the silver, gold and rose gold as before.
Static Home Button
The home button is no longer a button in the traditional sense, instead it’s static and force-sensitive. Instead of clicking down it simply transmits a vibration, much like the MacBook Force Touch trackpads.
It’s Water Resistant
The new iPhone 7 isn’t quite waterproof but it is water-resistant, certified at an IP rating of IP67. This means the new iPhone 7 is rated as dust tight and water resistant in up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes.
Dual Lens Camera System
The iPhone 7 features two single-lens cameras. There’s a 7 megapixels front-facing camera, up from the 5 megapixels on the iPhone 6. The rear-facing camera is 12 megapixels and has a f/1.8 sensor, whereas the iPhone 6s has a f/2.2. This should mean it performs better in low light. It’s also 60% quicker than the cameras on previous iPhones. What’s more, the larger iPhone 7 Plus model will have a two-lens camera at the back, allowing for a greater depth of field.
A Brighter Display
There’s no new changes to the screen size, resolution or pixel density. These stay the same at 4.7 inches, 1334 × 750 pixels and 326 pixels per inch. However, Apple has stated the new iPhone 7display is 25% brighter than previous models, with improved colour management.
Improved Audio Experiences
One of the biggest and most controversial new features of the new iPhone 7 is the Airpod wireless headphones that connect to the lightning port. The headphone socket has been removed, however Apple have stated they will provide customers with an adapter for older headphones.
Further to the wireless headphones, Apple has upgraded the phone receiver turning it into a speaker unit with the same power as the one at the bottom of the phone. This means music lovers can listen to the tunes they love with better quality sound at twice the volume.
iPhone 7 Key Features:
Apple Watch: Series 2
The all new Apple Watch focuses heavily on the fitness features, particularly swimming workouts. Because of this, the Series Two Apple Watch will be swim proof and water resistant up to 50 meters. It has GPS built in so customers can get even more accurate pace and distance readouts during running workouts. What’s more, it will be able to count laps, track average lap pace and detect stroke type to accurately measure active calorie burn.
